ok so i have this knocking noise come out of the motor of my 97 eclipse, when its sitting idle its fine there isnt any noise at all it sound excellent but when you start to accelerate it starts knocking, the noise sound like a loose bolt if that helps, my first guess was a rod but a few ppl have told me that if it was a rod knocking that it would be constant and not just when i accelerate, anyone have any advice on what i should check out

 

what transmission? auto or manual?

my first thought would be something in the drivetrain, but you said you thinkits the engine. Does the rate of the knocking change at all? If it does, then does it change faster with speed, or with rpm's?

 

Can you get a recording of it?

 

when you start up you hear it as soon as it turns over for a brief second and then when you accelerate in 1st gear and then it seams after you shift into 2nd its gone, i dont drive it everyday its just a project right now
