i didnt know there was a way to check for it,i just thought it was something that happened and left you stranded.i guess its a real good idea to see how well maintained the entire car is that may give you an idea how it was treated

well It isnt something you just look at but there are signs that point it out and say to you here it comes. If the oil light comes on at idle, if the clutch sticks to the floor (I Think only on left turns) if when you have the clutch press down you can hear a tapping\rattleing sound really soft. there are more things aside from that but Im not sure I never really studied up on the subect since I dont need to woory about it.
Maitenace is important do oil changes on time or early(I do my EVO every 1500-2000 Miles with Mobile1 synthetics) and all that other jaz when it comes to maintaining is important

There's a sticky that Emonz wrote... I could have sworn there was a crankwalk specific one but I guess not... that talks about CW. And yes it IS in left turns that the clutch sticks.

www.vfaq.com and google crankwalk sings and that will also help.
For the most part though mike hit it right on the nose, clutch sticking to the floor on left hand turns, and a light ticking noise from the timming belt area(not the valve cover). Best thing to do is see how the car was/is mantained. If you take out the dip stick and the oil is dirty or their is a lack of oil there chances are its been neglected. Also check for normal stuff like how clean the eb is and check the rotors for excessive wear.

Put the car up on a lift with an assistant inside. With the engine off, have him step on the clutch (this will push the crank to it's outermost position). From there, take a prybar and try to push it back into the engine pressing against the inside of the harmonic balancer or against the crank bolt- using the body of the vehicle for leverage. Anything visible is too much. Don't push against the outer edge of the harmonic balancer (which is supported by a rubber bushing) as it will flex making you think the crank is actually moving.
