Hi guys,


I had my check engine light came on about a month or two ago. My car is a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. I took my car to Autozone today and the codes showed up were p0135 and p0421. I found out that the P0135 is related to the o2 sensor at the front of the car near the exhaust manifold. However, for the p0421 code, this is somehow related to my catalytic converter and after researching, it seems like my cat is gone. So to sum it all, what do you guys think I should do first? Change the o2 sensor first and worry about the second code later? Also I have been reading on the internet about PCM recalls for certain Mitsubishi cars, saying something like car dealer will replace your cat converter if the code shows up and your car is under 100k warranty. s this true? What should I do now? Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!

 

I just called 888-MITSU2008 and they said there were no recalls on my model. Please I need your advice as soon as possible because school is in another week and I need a reliable car to commute. Thanks!

As for your codes. Id replace the 02 sensors before you do anything else since they are more likely to die out than a cat. I am assuming this car is not modified at all, correct?

If your check engine light comes on that doesnt mean your car is falling apart or going to be unreliable. It is just a dummy light to tell you that one of the cars sensors is ready off or is not working properly. Basically means you may need to do some basic maintanence most of the time

 

the only reason i can think that a cat would be gone is that you have headers on it and in that case the only way to get the light to stay off is to put an aftermarket cat on or do the o2 antifouler trick. but if you have aftermarket headers then that may be why youre throwing both codes

 

I do not have any headers in my car. I bought the car completely stocked and it has been. The only thing that I modified is I bought some HIDS for my car. Other than that the car is stock from front to back. So I guess I'll just have to replace both sensors and find out. I am just hoping the cat is not bad because they are so expensive to replace and I'm a broke college student.

 

The cat is covered under the federal emissions warranty 8 years 80k miles.

 

Apparently my car has 93k miles on it...still running great with minor damages and errors though.

 

 

i would do the o2 sensors first, since it will cause the car to die out. otherwise for the cat, if you do not have header on your car, and its the cat actually failing, you can either get a new one, weld pipe in place and still see the code, or get a test pipe, their like 50 bucks online, but im not sure it will have the plug for the o2 sensor in it.
