View Full Version : Performace mods for 2003 Outlander??
kiwicom 08-11-2004, 01:57 PM Has anyone "chipped" their Outlander or improved the air intake form better breathing? I am wondering who (if anyone sells the chips). If anyone has done any minor mods like these could you please post and also let us know the performance increase that you received.....Thx
Muffler and Intake are the only Mods I've done.......makes a big difference.
They probably make a chip for the Outlander...I would not buy any of that shiot they sell on eBay.
wildwest 08-13-2004, 11:04 AM if you are going to "chip" it, do it right. JET chip. But make all your other mods first. they will tune the chip to the current mods. deffinately intake and exhaust first. then think about the chip.
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 02:17 PM When you say "Jetchip"..I called them and they say they don't do the Outlander. I'm not sure if I spoke to the right person though. JMC when you say intake and muffler what exactly did you do and did you have to reprogram the chip after. Also how much additional HP did you get? Is your Outlander 2003/2004? Allso how noisey is the new muffler. I don't what a loud car. Anyone do a catback?
Thanks for your help...
wildwest 08-13-2004, 02:29 PM K&N fipk or typhoon intake. cat back, decent muffler with a low backpressure but still semi quiet and non angry bee. JET is just one company that does chips. Look around either for a piggyback or a place that you can send your chip into and they will reprogram. either will run you 100-200 dollars. 5-10 hp for the intake. 10 for the exhaust. 10-30 hp for the chip depending on how aggressive you ask them to make it.
wildwest 08-13-2004, 02:33 PM also if you are really wanting to spend some money and make her sing. fuel controller to boost fuel pressure. ported intake runners and throttle body. internals if you have time & money...
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 02:44 PM Thanks Wildwest. I'm just a bit concerned about extra noise. I definately don't want a whole lot more. I had a catback on my old Audi A4 and ended up taking it of. The Outlander doesn't have the same sound proofing so would hate that "drone" at speed. Any coments would be much appreciated.
wildwest 08-13-2004, 02:56 PM what kind of cat back did you have... they also make adjustables. or you could look at the turboflow or spiral flow mufflers. Ive heard alot of good things about the spiral flow.
"Tuned" exhaust will be louder though. When you are looking up different systems try to see what rpm range they are tuned for. I dont know if manufactures give out that information. We made our own. it is just a slightly longer or shorter pipe to make it flow the best (loudest) at a certain rpm range. find a higher rpm tuned exhaust and it will be the loudest above normal cruising rpm.
Undercoat the car?
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 03:00 PM Thx. I'll do more research and let you know what happens....
wildwest 08-13-2004, 03:01 PM http://www.powereffects.com/tech.htm
here is the website for power effects... tunable spiral flow cat back exhaust.
and they are adjustable with a turn of a knob.
My muffler is really low and sounds beautiful..........no Honda noise at all.
My Cone Filter was louder than my muffler.
Anybody have any info on a Strut Bar?????
Thanks!
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 05:47 PM K&N don't make an intake for the Outlander> Do you us the one for the Eclipse?
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 05:48 PM JMC what pipes and Muffler are you running?
wildwest 08-13-2004, 06:03 PM well if you live in califoria, you can go to k&n and they will make one for you.
I'm using a BATTLEZ exhaust
RS Exh Tip Size (mm): 101.6
Center Pipe Size (mm): 50.8
Noise db: 90

JMC what pipes and Muffler are you running?
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 06:04 PM Too far North (Canada)...will call them. Thx
let me know if you want the link for the exhaust
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 06:13 PM JMC lay the link on me....How loud is that exhaust on the open road 90 db is pretty loud. Most of all how is it from the drivers seat?
Click Me! (http://jaosusa.com/preview.asp?catid=18)
It's not that loud.......I'm sure you could silence it if it was too loud.
kiwicom 08-13-2004, 07:31 PM JMC is yours a CatBack? Did they custom make it 4 U?
kiwicom 08-15-2004, 11:42 AM Basically as I understand it...you just changed out your muffler and put in a bigger pipe from the resonator.....and you noticed a power increase......I know that sometimes the extra noise "feels" like more power.. Have I got the story right?
Thx
outlancer 08-15-2004, 05:44 PM how much did the new exhaust cost and was it really worth it. just to make sure this is the muffler that can be tuned right?
There was an increse in Power and Noise.......I could tell between the two.
The Exhaust was around $200 or so.....I got a good deal through a shop.
kiwicom 08-16-2004, 09:56 PM JMC do you think the intake gave you the biggest boost or do they both work hand in hand. By the way for anyone reading these postings. New Zealand and Australia have cheap "used" parts for Outlanders. I bought a speedo cluster (silver) for $200 US. I bet the performance stuff is equally cheap.
wildwest 08-17-2004, 10:26 AM they work hand in hand... one compliments the other. being able to suck the air in only helps when it can spit it out... you dont have to do both, but doing so would help the most.
Once again Wildwest.........exactly what I would have said. You the man!
Yo kiwicom.......do you have a link or any info on the parts?
Thanks!
outlancer 08-17-2004, 02:31 PM hey guys i called up power effect where they sell the battlez exhaust and they wanted to sell me all kinds of stuff for around$340 thats not including installation or fabrication. that price is only for parts. on the picture i see a nice chrome pipe with a muffler which i wouldnt mine paying that price for since i would be able to bolt it up myself. but for that price i could get a custom exhaust with my cats gutted and probably gain more than 4-5 hp. and besides i wanted to see if i could run the muffler to the left side just so i could be different.
wildwest 08-17-2004, 03:40 PM the question is do you want to pay for the looks. most people really dont need chromed or stainless exhaust. The only advantage to stainless is the fact that it resists rusting. id say find a local shop and get an in and you could have them fabricate one for much less. Dual cat back:D. maybe even ask the guys if they do it in their spare time. a guy i worked with at the ford dealer had a pipe bender at home and did the work they were not allowed to do at the dealer. ie cat removal... oversizing pipes...
kiwicom 08-17-2004, 04:42 PM The guy I dealt with is Jim Palmer. Here is the site address http://www.queenstreetmotors.co.nz/. You can email him directly here info@queenstreetmotors.co.nz. Good luck JMC.
$340sounds right..............I got a deal from a friend who owns a shop so I did a little better than just buying own from a dealer.
This exhaust is looks and power!
WOO!

tuner automotive 09-30-2004, 04:20 PM You guys that did the intake and muffler upgrade ....did you notice a difference in MPG?
And did you use a CAI when doing the intake upgrade or just a K&N drop in ?
I have a 03 Outlander 2.4L AWD.
I want to get rid of the narrow stock intake .
You'll notice a slight difference in MPG.
The first thing I did when I got the Outlander was order a K&N Filter.
Then I went CAI...............
tuner automotive 09-30-2004, 07:16 PM But is it REALLY Cold Air the intake is sucking in ?
Since most CAI are stuffed in the engine bay the air is not as cool as it is in the fender or up front.
Any gains in HP and MPG with your CAI and do you have pics of it.
The ones I have seen are for the Lnacer and all it is is a adapter for the end of the MAF and a cone filter.
I want something more effieciant than looks.
You can go Cone Filter or full CAI........Either way there will be a slight difference.
The only true way to find out for sure is to do it yourself.............
tuner automotive 10-01-2004, 01:15 AM Do you have pics of your install?
I'll see if I can get a few pics taken soon.................
