Hey sexylady,

The lifters in all DOHC and TT motors are in the same place, under the cams, like you said. It is not so much that the lifters go bad in the 1st gens, it was more of an engineering error. The oil port through the lifters is 1mm on the 1st gens, what happens is the lifter will lose its prime (they are hydralic lifters) and start ticking. It is a very common problem, but it does not harm the engine, it just makes it sound like hell. I believe they increased the size of the port of the 2nd gen lifters to 1.5mm and still had a occasional lifter tick. In the 1998 & 1999 models they increase the oil port to 3mm and voila, no more lifter tick, ever. If you can afford them, I would recommend getting the "3rd gen" lifters. 3sxperformance carries them, so does stealerships. They are about 300 bucks from 3sx.

scroll down a bit and you will find their "big bore lifters"
