Have 96' Galant S with 235k miles. It had 60k major service done just 2k miles ago. It developed new problem: engine shutting off at highway speeds between 65 and 70 miles an hour and mostly on inclines. Started 3 days ago at 73 miles an hour, it jerked the engine 2 - 3 times and it felt like transmission got disengaged and and engaged twice, rpm's went up and down and engine shut down, few lights came on dashboard just like when starting the car (seatbelt, battery, SRS, oil) no lose of power or lights. It started fine after a minute and 5 miles later same thing but with a lot less of jerking. It happened about 7 more times, with no jerking of engine, and only 2 on flat part of highway. Final stop happened after after about 25 miles and driving at 55 miles per hour. When to my mechanic and had had fuel pump replaced since those were typical symptoms of pump going bad. Last night driving on highway at 68 miles on incline, going over 5 inlines, the engine died again on the 6th uphill. Started fine again after a minute and drove back 30 miles at 55 miles per hour with no problem. Tooked the car to same shop and see if they can figure it out. They will change relay switch for pump and put in new filter (just in case filter that was put in 2k miles ago got clogged). Anything else can cause engine to shut down like that and start again and so on. Any ideas guys?

 

Well it looks like the problem was 6 months old distributor with cap, not sure which one but since they came as a set they both got replaced with new one and it seems so far that all is good .
