Cooling System!

Cooling System!
I have a 1997 Lancer GLi station with a 1.6 litre 4G92 engine.
Driving from Holland to southern France gave me cooling problems. The car would overheat after 100km, after popping the hood I noticed that the coolant resivoir was full and coolant had been leaking out of the overflow, the radiator itself was empty. Also the woven copper type stuff between the radiator pipes is sarting to fall out, I found a lump of it in the fan (which does run) I have checked the oil for water and that is fine, and there is hot air blowing out the heater.
Anyone got a clue? This is doing my nut in!![:@]

RE: Cooling System!
I'd be surprised if it were the Therm. from what's been described. The "woven copper" are the heat transfer fins from the water tubes to the air. If yours are falling out then you need a new rad. These fins need to be tight against the water tubes to transfer heat properly. It also sounds like your rad cap needs replacement. I would replace the rad and cap as well as do a complete check on hoses as it looks as if this system has not been serviced for a long time. Maybe even a flush and new fluid. You could replace the therm as a safety measure since you may be installing a new rad hose there anyway.
