Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Default 03 awd

Good day, I bought a 03 montero with AWD, but it will not shift into 4wd or AWD. no light are on on the dash board. There are times when it feels like it's in 4wd and others not. over all it's very clean and needs nothing else, just a tune-up. I can't find much about this suv. Thanks for any help

Do the dashboard lights for the wheels and C/D Lock light up when you start the engine? They should come on and then everything that is not engaged will turn off. If this does not happen - you have burned out bulbs. If not - the issues is elsewhere.

No, they do not come to think of it. everything else comes on but the 4x4 lights. But the shifter will not move side to side yes, but not into 4x4 up or down to awd.

I guess pull the instrument cluster and check the bulbs. Hopefully they are burned out and replacing them will show you if things are engaging/disengaging properly. One more thing and you probably should do this first - I'm sure there is a fuse for transfer case and indicator lights. Look in the manual and poke under the hood to see if it is a blow fuse causing all of this.

I checked the fuses and all are fine. I also did not find any fuses for the 4x4. I'm going to be taking the dash apart I think and replacing light bulbs. I'm also going to do a full tune-up. next week.

Apparently, there are few AWD versions because I have not found any accurate info here or elsewhere about my '02 AWD problems with 4Hi giving a flashing 4H lamp. There is no freewheel clutch on the front differential or relays to control it. There are 2 switches on the top of the transfer case that signal successful shifting that are probably the problem with mine. I think the 4Hi is engaging and I know that the 4Lo is engaging. I will probably take mine in to a dealer to get this done because of how hard it is to get at the switches.

I agree. I can't find crap. And the dealer only want to sell me a new suv, saying it's not worth fixing. I do not need or want a new suv.
