Default 03 Montero Intermittent Grinding Noise

Hi! I have 2003 Mitsubishi Montero with 87K miles. A few days ago, I noticed an inttermittent grinding Noise coming from front passenger side. The noise goes away after coming to a full stop. Then after a 30 to 40 Minutes driving it comes back again until I comes to a full stop. This is if I drive in 2WD mode. But if I engage the 4WD mode to noise dissappear. So overall the problem only happens in 2WD mode. Please advise and how much do you think an average repair will cost?? Thank you in advance.

the 4wd engagement solenoid pack has failed. those solenoids control the transfer case engagement. the noise you are hearing is the transfer case trying to engage when it isnt supposed to. fairly common issue. that solenoid pack is located is on the passengers side firewall. open the hood, look on the passengers side wheel well. 2 solenoids with several vacume lines going to it. cost is around 130.00. can eaisily be done at home. just transfer one vacume line at a time so you dont install them wrong. can cause worse problems if you do. good luck!!

I have a similar problem.

Our 2003 Montero Limited, 141,000 miles, 5 Spd automatic, 4 wheel drive.

When slowing down at a speed of around 5 to 10 mph, getting a severe grinding noise from Right Rear wheel.

Has new brakes all around, so am sure it's not that. However, the E-brake seemed suspect.

Took the rotor off, inspected the E-brake shoes, and they appear totally un-used. A bit of orange dust which is expected. But the shoes look like new.

Could this grinding be an axle bearing? Or perhaps something with the right rear CVJ?

Please help.

Thanks
