'03 Montero Ltd - Valve Cover Gaskets
I need to replace a leaky valve cover gasket on the right side... about 73k on the truck; tightening the bolts helped for a bit then the leak came back. I have the gaskets on order, does anyone happen to have the torque specs for the bolts? Also, for those who have done this before, is any adhesive or sealant required or recommended for the gaskets? Or do they just go in dry? I guess the truck is getting to the age where I need to pick up a service manual!

Do both gaskets, They get as hard as a rock and very tough to get off too. I also used silicone on mine. I put them on just hand tight then overnight dry. I tightened them to the toqure .....INCH Lbs not foot Lbs.. food for thought.

I chose not to use any silicone sealants when I replaced my valve cover gaskets. Make sure the channels in the valve cover where the gasket sits are clean and not deformed. Also clean the mating surface on the cylinder heads. Tightening torque on the valve cover is very very very very light - 30 INCH Pounds. Make sure tighten all six bolts in stages, so that you don't deform the cover by squashing down one corner. Don't forget to replace the spark plug hole gaskets while you are doing this.
