Default 1985 2.8L points system ignition issues

So I just got my 85 pajero swb from England to AK and I started having ignition issues. She died on me and after some trouble shooting I figured she wasn't getting spark so I canned the coil due to bad secondary ohms check. Then discovered that the points system was damaged. Spring that maintains pressure had cracked. Ordered parts but am waiting on shipping and still need to use truck. So I rigged a bit of a spring from a pen to suffice till parts arrive. She drove fine for about a day then started bouncing the tach above 3k. It's gotten progressively worse to the point where 2k rpm indicated around 4 to 5k and idle is 2 to 3k. Engine is running properly just poor indication. Have replaced all of ignition aside from faulty points. Thinking it might be a miss matched coil (BWD p-series from O'Reillys). Had a similar problem on my 89 mini but there are so many different variations of mini setups and basically one for the pajero that I didn't think O'Reillys computer could be wrong. Any advice on what to try, coil recommendations, etc would be great.

Thanks
