1995 Montero LS 4x4 3.0 Auto for $800... Help!
Hi All,
I am new to the forum but have been lurking around for the past few days.
In short, I am looking to get into a Montero. I love what everyone has to say about them. Ideally I would like a Gen I - the square body is just too cool. I might actually get one... however, from the sky came falling an $800 offer...
It is a 1995 LS 4x4 automatic. About 238k on the Ode. It was rebuilt and has about 30k on the Timing belt, Rebuild and Water pump. Interior and Exterior are in Excellent shape. Everything works - A/C included. Has a big *** rack on the top with extra lights on the front bumper and rack itself. Again, Everything works.
The Catch -It won't pass emissions. He had a new CAT installed. The mechanic says it is due to either 2 things... A stuck Valve or the Coil Packs need replacing...
I don't know anything about either of those. What I do know is that I am a but of a sucker buyer...
At $800 - can I REALLY go wrong on this?
Also - I am about to go check it out with cash on hand - if anyone can chime in soon it would be great! Are there certain things you would look closely at on inspection? If so - How?
Thanks my hopefully NEW friends

for 800 buck, id take it, but expect problems.
At that mileage id be looking at rings as the cause of smog.
Coils are easy drop in replacement, valve job bit more involved.
Between rings and head youd be good for another 200k though.

Thanks for the kick in guys.
I think I'm going to spring on it. We are down to $700. I am planning on a valve job right off the bat to the tune of about $700.
$1400 in on a nice we maintained body/interior rust free. I expect the tranny would be next, but maybe that can be delayed 25 k miles from know.
The parts alone are worth the buying .
The girlfriend is buying it... I'll be driving it. Expect some posts while I look for my GenII!!
Thx
