Default '98 Montero Sport LS 3.0 Speedometer/odometer not working

Just bought a '98 Montero Sport LS w/ a manual transmission with 140K. Runs good, the previous owner had the transmission rebuilt in March. Except for the tailshaft area. He said the output shaft seal was leaking and needed a new output shaft seal as well as the bearing, and apparently it needs a new tailshaft housing. It is leaking oil, and the speedometer and odometer quit working. The dealer I purchased the vehicle from replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor and the speedo/odo worked for about 130 miles. I got under the vehicle and saw the VSS strapped up with tiny zip-ties and it was covered in fresh oil. Could that be the cause of the fail? And is it worth re-replacing the VSS before I get the tailshaft/output shaft issues fixed?
