Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Bought my 01 Monty Limited with 82k on her in 2006 and I currently have 192K. I loaned to a friend to tow a trailer and got it back with a blown head gasket (go figure) $1600 to fix found local mechanic. I replaced front brakes I think twice only paid once since they are lifetime pads. Replaced rear brake shoes last year. Just replaced Tires $900 cooper. Front Wheel bearings went out 2 months ago found them online for $35 each and replaced them. Replaced Shocks and Struts a week ago for $240 as was seeing some back shock ware. My next projects: I'm getting a vibration at 70-80 mph and have narrowed down to the drive shaft. I also need to replace Stabilizer Link connections as I think they are rattling. I typically do all the work myself except for the major ones like the Blown Head Gasket. With all that said I love my Monty !

I just got an oil changed today on my 96 LS and got it washed, it has nearly 229000 miles and it does burn oil, leak it into the alternator and having to replace it every 7-8 months which sucks! And a new thing recently is that the car makes continuous rattling/knocking sound from engine, sounds like some bearings in the engine are worn, other than that the car drives really strong and smoothly on the road.

Default 282xxx and counting...

I just bought my '02 Full Monty Limited from the original owner for $1,650. It's super clean and appears to have been very-well maintained. It does have a misfire from the 3/6 coil - my research has pointed me in the direction of the ignition control module taking a dump. I've ordered a new one from RockAuto that will be here in a couple of days. Per the owner (and the small puddle in my driveway) the power steering hose is leaking. I have yet to confirm this as I'm focusing on the misfire first.

I've been lusting for a Limited for some time now only my budget hasn't allowed me to pay more than what I can allot for it (I'm a Realtor i.e. commission) - I love the looks of my Limited and that it's fully loaded.

Future plans/winter project are to replace the timing belt & water pump, plugs & wires and pull the heads to replace the head gaskets and get a valve job for good measure since the engine will be tore down that far anyway...as I said she has 282xxx miles on her and appears to be strong and healthy...

Just for kicks, has anyone looked into swapping the 3.5 with the 3.8? Is it doable?

Here are some pics (cleaning up the hazed headlights are on the to-do list) - and yes, the front bumper has been replaced with a newer one...

Default Love my Mitzi

My 2001 Montero Sport just turned 321,000 miles and everything seems to be working fine. I replaced a radiator at 200,000 but other than routine maintenance, my experience has been bulletproof. I have used total synthetic oil since 100,000 and i think that has made a big difference in its longeivity. I am an avid outdoorsman and spend as much time as possible in the Blue Ridge or Smoky Mountains. Mitzi has never left me stranded despite some pretty gnarly conditions. I just wish Mitsubishi would bring the Montero Sport back!!!

I was at a Autozone last week, and saw a '01 XLS w/ 372K on it. Was a little rough around the edges, but still chugging along. Love my Ltd.

Default 8 codes after the rebuild ????

Hello again, I just got done with the rebuild and runs like a champ with a bit of a crappy Idol for some reason. I am getting 8 codes now as follows.
1--P0174-- bank 2 system to lean
2--P0154--oxy circuit no activity detected bank 2 sensor 1
3--P0401--exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient flow detected
4--Po111-- intake air temperature sensor 1 circuit range / Performance
5--Po107--Manifold absolute pressure circuit or barometric pressure low input
6--P0174--bank 2 system to lean
7--Po154--oxy circuit no activity detected bank 2 sensor 1
8--P0401--Exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient gas detected.

Any thoughts before I go Ripping things apart again... Thank You for all your help in this matter.Note how I get the same code 1&6.

Mitch,
I'm no expert but it sounds like bad connections to your Oxy Sensors or they are bad. There should be 4 of them.
