Default AWD issue?

Hey guys, new to the forum, just bought a 03 montero sport with only 56K miles.
Tried to search the forum but not much luck, wondering if my issue is normal or not. This is my first AWD vehicle, as far as I can tell there is no 2wd option, its always AWD unless i throw it in 4wd. When turning real slow(parking) it seems as though the 4wd is engaging even though its in AWD. I feel like it shouldnt be doing that. Or is that just the nature of AWD??? Anyone experience this??

Hello whitey, It sounds like you have a problem with the CV joint, Jack it up and check for play and if spin the wheel backwards then forwards you shouldn't have any play...food for thought dude and good luck. PS> jack both sides up.

Default AWD issue

What do you mean by "feels like 4wd is engaging"? Does it feel like the turn is not smooth and the wheel is sort of hopping through the turn? Is the feeling worse if you are turning left or right?
The reason it could be a CV joint issue, is the malfunction you describe happens only during turning. That is when CV joint will be under most stress and if it is worn out it can be binding up in certain position. That would feel like hopping and jerking through the turn.
Another possible cause is the front differential engagement is malfunctioning. But since you describe the issue occurring only in turns, it is less likely to be that.

Hey guys thanks for the responses.. Yes it feels like the tires are grabbing or hopping through the turn, but like I said before it's only when parking and it does it turning both ways...gotta work all day but when I get hm I'll jack it up and wiggle the tires around.
