Burning Smell + Brake & Battery Light

Burning Smell + Brake & Battery Light
I just had the alternator replaced and I've had a leaky gasket replaced before, but I was at a stop light on my way to work and smelled something burning- the smell was like black cat firecrackers- then the brake light and battery light came on. I was still able to drive .25 miles to work and I turned the car off. The whole cab smells like burning.
-What could have happened ?
-Should I drive in rush hour 1.5 hrs home or get a tow ?

Sounds like some sort of wiring issue. Not sure what would cause it and where to look. Stick your head under the dash and with a flashlight make a visual check for any scorched wires. Did your brakes got softer after this? It is possible that your booster motor fried. That would be under the hood. Check there too, see if smell comes from area near brake reservoir.
