I have an '86 montero
I bought it new in 1987. How many miles do you have on your montero? I replaced the engine in mine once and it is still slogging through whatever I put in its path. Plus parts here and there. These rugged old ones are the last of their kind. I am on the east coast...where all the earthquakes and hurricanes are.

I m the second owner. It has about 116,000 miles which is not all that many. You are right these older ones are great machines. I understand that the head is a bit of a weak spot.
The trouble I am having is a rattle noise which seems to me to be coming from the timing chain. I was about to try adjusting the jet valve and see about taking a look behind the timing cover, but I could not even get started as the second spark plug is really stuck. All the others came out easily but not that one... I've been spraying some PB Blaster on it for a couple days, but I'm afraid to really whack it very hard to try and break it loose.
I was thinking of giving it to a mechanic to have a go at all those things.

Looking for CO mechanic
Hello Bob J,
Don't know if you found a mechanic yet - what part of CO are you residing? I just moved to TN from Greeley CO. So in that area, Greeley Automotive Machine is a good engine machine shop, Bruce is the name of the proprietor. They build race engines, I had my '93 3.0 v-6 from my Montero rebuilt there, they did a good job. Also, Greeley West Auto, gentleman by the name of John Roy worked on the same '93; was thorough, reasonably priced, did a good job. Hope it helps.
