DIY FAQ: 2001-2006 Montero (maybe Sport), Top glove box have key hole to lock 4 FREE
Ok, for those of you with 2001-2006 Monteros, (NOT SPORT, but it may apply to them I don't know how their interior looks), as you are aware we have 2 glove boxes, the top and bottom one.
The top has no key hole, the bottom has one which allows you to lock it for more security.
Now here is a way to have the top also have a key lock, FOR FREE.
All you need is a drill, and depending how big you want the hole, varying drill bits.
If you compare the opening mechanism of the top and bottom glove boxes, THEY ARE THE SAME, except the one on the bottom has the lock exposed.
Guess, what, the top one ALSO has a lock, BUT its covered with the plastic over it. All you need to do is drill smack in the center (JUST USE THE BOTTOM ONE AS A TEMPLATE TO SEE WHERE THE HOLE IS)
DRILL SLOW AND CAREFUL as you do not want to tear up the lock, once you start to see it is in the correct position, remove the entire opening mechanism and take out the lock so you can clean up the hole.
If you do not want to risk damaging the lock, just remove the assembly to begin with and remove the locking mechnism then drill the hole in the plastic. To have a cleaner look, paint the face of the lock black.
If it is not aesthetically pleasing, just switch the bottom with the top and put the newly modified opening mechanism with lock now exposed on the bottom glove box. its not clearly seen now that it was a hack job if you didnt do it well, then move the one originally from the bottom to the top so its nice and clean.
