Default Engine swaps

I have a 87 Montero, it has a 4 cyl with the feedback carb. It runs well but I am interested in improving the experience so I want to swap a v6 into it. Any ideas as to what might fit in the frame, I am a fabricator and have built many hot rods etc so that part isn't so hard but it would be fun to keep the original stick shift etc. but I am flexible. There is a 90 Montero 4wd close to me for sale with a v6 automatic, I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to weather the drive train would fit into the smaller body. I am relatively sure a GM 4.6 would fit with a bit of welding etc but if something else will fit with less work I'm up for it. Thanks
Bill
