Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Is this a good deal?

Default Is this a good deal?

Hi guys, 1st time posting, long time lurking. Wanted to know if you guys think this is a good deal.

1996 Montero LS 3.0 SOHC 160,000 miles. $2350

The guy bought the car a year ago and put 10,000 miles on it and selling because he wants a newer pathfinder. It started as a rental/fleet car for 2 years.

Good things.
The car is in pretty good shape mechanically. Brakes are good, no squeaking or lack of braking power. Engine runs and idles pretty smooth and downshifts pretty smooth. no misfires. No white smoke out of the exhaust. Oil and coolant looks pretty clean. Tires 30% left. No rust.

Bad things.
The paint on the hood has faded pretty badly, I can see primer at some areas, but no bare metal. Dirty carpet. Slow window modules. 2 of the 4wd lights went out. Slight pull to the right (maybe alignment or just uneven tire pressure problem). All relatively small problems.
Here is what I am really worried about.
When the car idles, it makes this little fast ticking noise for a while and stops and go a while and stop, I don't know much about engines and it sounds like it could be normal, or it could be a problem.
Also If I put it in park and shift it into 4H lock, sometimes it won't come out of 4H lock into 4H and 2H unless I take it out of park into reverse and it will kind of pop out with the gear shift. But the shifter makes no clunk noise when going in and out of P, R, N, and D.

So what do you guys think? good deal. I got the guy down to $2200 cash and I agreed to pay for $50 smog check and set aside $100 for a pre purchase check up. So total will be $2350.

o and KBB marks the car at $4,000 and Edmunds TMV marks it at $1,350. I don't rally know which is correct.
