I have a 2003 Montero Sport, it has 234,000 miles a month ago I replaced the fuel filter for the first time, because it would cut off some times, was great for a month, then while driving on the freeway up hill, it felt weak and died out after exiting the freeway, but would start after several attempts to start it, service engine light up, then several days after it seem to be ok for a week, and service engine light switched off, then 2 days ago, when I tried to start it died right off, tried several times to start it and same thing, so to make it idle I had to give it gas, then kept it at 2000 rpm and gradually dropped pedal to reach 1000 Rpm then suddenly it went back up to 2000 by itself, then slowly release gas pedal and it stayed idle, after it warms up is fine but low idle around 400 RPM, I replaced the mass airflow sensor, and same thing, has any one had this problem and found the cause problem, a solution would be greatly appreciated, thanks

 

When you vehicle died and CEL came on, do you know what the code was? You can try to connect an OBD2 code reader and see if there are any "Pending" codes. If you do get any codes, record the Freeze Frame data and let us know what are the numbers show.

I think there might be a problem with the wiring going to your MAF vs problem with the MAF itself
