Default Possible Montero swap new-to-old

So I have a 01 Montero sport. Works great no issues other then it needs the cat replaced. Its 4x2 which is a real bummer. Only choice at the time. Anyway I have come across a 1998 Montero sport. It is 4x4 with a factory Rear locker. Has leather looks like an XLS. It has gauges in the middle of the dash?? Anyway Mechanically are the older ones any more dependable then the new ones? Main reason I am looking to swap is the 4x4 with the Rear locker.

I think what your looking at isnt a sport at all but rather a full size montero with the winter package. They are sweet! I wish I couldve found a decent 2.5 gen when I purchased my 2003 ltd. "No rear locker" I would drop the sport over the fullsize and never look back...as long as the 98 is in good shape.

Nah your right, that most certainly is a sport. I was unaware that the sport offered a rear locker as an option. I would weigh out the miles of your current sport with this one, also the shape cosmetically. The one in the link looks pretty clean. The plastics are faded which is no biggie to re paint them so that wouldnt be a deal breaker for me. I would look more towards the enigine. A 4x4 swap wouldnt be that bad if you could do it yourself, but honestly the cost to have it done plus the cost of the truck, and what ever you already have in your current truck you could buy a much nicer newer rig that offered less miles plus all the options that you would get out of a swap, especially if you will be using it as a daily driver. If you would be just using it for a weekend warrior/ adventure rig, I would buy it do some maintenance and drive the heck out of on trails and camping trips. These trucks will go for miles so 181k isnt bad.

Im not talking swap the rear. Im talking trading straight truck for truck.

'98s a bit late for my liking.
Older is frequently better.
