Default Recommendations on an engine 3.5 or 3.8L

Hello All-

First time post here. I have been reading here for a while. I decided to write in. I am looking at buying a Gen 3 Montero 2003-2006 and I want to know if there is an engine that anyone would recommend. The 3.8L sounds good based on hp. Can anyone comment on SOHC vs DOHC, injection type etc. .? Any other recommendation other than just the motor. Trim level, brakes, etc. Any advice is appreciated. It is a little hard to positively ID the motors from some of the pictures but that is all I have to go on until I arrive to see the cars but I don't want to have to drive all over Southern California if I can rule out vehicles that do not have the engine I want.

As soon as I figure out how to post pics I will ask which engines I am looking at. I want to make sure the body of the vehicle I pick has the correct motor.

Thank you!

Just a personal opinion - I would choose the one that has a timing chain instead of a belt. No idea if one or the other has a timing chain or not.
I have had to replace one timing belt in my life, and never want to do so again. That's a $900 job - for a belt…

I think they are both belts.

If you have to ask the answer is probably 3.8... You could always call the seller, they will probably know or be able to look and tell you rather than driving all the way there.

Most (if they are serious about selling) will even take a picture of a specific part and e-mail it to you before you drive there if you ask nicely.

I like the idea of the 3.8. I had not heard if one is better or more reliable.

Good tip on getting a picture from the seller. I will do that.

Thank you
