Default 2010 4cyl Outlander CV Joints/shafts - Any tips on replacing them?

I have a torn boot on the passenger side CV joint. Since the vehicle has 136k+ miles on it, I decided to replace both CV joints/shafts. Does anyone know if there is anything in particular I should watch out for? Any tips or shortcuts? I am curious as to what the snap/spring ring is for on the transmission end of this rebuilt passenger CV shaft. (see pic below)
