Default Automatic transmission sports mode is not functional

I have a 2003 Outlander. I recently noticed that sports mode is not anymore functional. In "D" drive the transmission performs normal, however the indicator light on the dash board is not on. (this might not be related). When I move the stick to the sports mode I stay in the gear I was in and it is not possible to shift between gears when I move the lever forwards or backwards. Also the indicator LCD is blank instead of showing one of the four forward gears the transmission is in.

Has anyone experienced something like this before or has anyone hints on how to solve this issue?
