but is your AC on when you start up? Is your fan set to blow on the windshield? Either will run the compressor and cause a bit of surging. Otherwise it sounds like a trip to the dealer.

Surge or surges? Its normal for any engine to run ~500 RPM higher when it first starts up until it reaches operating temperature. Its basically required to pass any emission laws in the world.
Surges on the other hand sounds like a bad wiring somewhere...

Surges... roller coaster up down,,,, while warming up ONLY

if it's bad wiring it would show hot or cold

this is just when it is cold when the car has sat overnight and start it for the first time the next day

We just purchased our slightly used 83000km 2007 outlander. Cold morning surging is one of the first things I noticed. Funny thing is that the weather only went down to 18C last night, which really isn't that cold. Normal daytime high is around 26C.

I am wondering if you suspect that this has always happened, or if this is something new.

I used to have a mazda tribute and when that happened to it, I had to replace the IAC (Idle Air Controller) valve. The valve was sticking and so the electronics were overpowering the servo to open and close the valve. It was a $130 part.

Our mitsu is still under warranty so I brought it back into the dealership, and they told me that they cleaned the throttle body. Sure guys. So we're in the same boat as you. Would really appreciate if you updated your findings here and what your dealership has to say. I intend to bring ours back to the dealership or stop by and ask them to start one of theirs up that's on the lot.

leo167, any update to what the you or the dealer found out? It is good to know, that it took my 93 until this year to have the same symptoms as a 2010.

I'll never find out, I traded for a sport (not because of idle surge)
