Havoline Dextron VI is certified for J2 and J3. The PDF below shows what it covers.

Amazon.com: Havoline (226535721-12PK) DEXRON-VI Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid - 1 Quart, (Pack of 12): Automotive
That's a great deal for a 12-quart case ($49 divided by 12 equals $4.08 per quart, shipping included!).

But, just for information, Edmontonians can buy it off the shelf at the Chevron Cardlock station at 1191 168 St. for $7.99 CAD per qt. (Yes, apparently the usual rip-off of the Canadian consumer is in play, but this is still a far better price than the J3 at local stealerships.)

Edit: Also available for $7.30 per quart at Red-L Distributors at 9727 47 Ave., Edmonton

I'm sure you guys know a ton more about this stuff than I do...but for me...while a vehicle is under warranty...in my 15 Outlander's case..I would always let the dealer do all the vital fluid changes///especially CVT transmission fluid during the 160,000km Powertrain Warranty... if they screw it up..they would have to fix it...If I do...then not so much....just my.02

I would only do that to make sure it's well documented. It shows up in the dealer computer as being done.

After the warranty, it's not hard to do at all. Just slightly more work than an oil change.

I actually wouldn't. When mine was under warranty, I took mine in for a "change". They stated they only do a drain and fill...not changing it all out. That only gets a 1/4 of the fluid out. If you are going to hold onto these things for a long time, then you need to think about how your maintenance regimen is going to hold up after the warranty is done. If the dealership does just good enough maintenance to get through warranty, then you pay and they get business.

How much would that drain and fill cost??

My local dealer is small but they do a full flush for $150.

Back on 09...it was 139 and they called it a fluid change. I found out after the work was done it was only a drain and fill.
I really doubt they do a full flush for 150. The fluid alone costs about that much, then they charge about an hour which is 80-90 $/hr, and they still have to make some money too.

They don't pay anywhere near that much for the fluid. Probably costs them half that much, so maybe $60 for fluid, and 30 minutes of actual labor takes place. So they pay the tech $25. At $150, the dealer still makes a healthy profit. I have a friend that works a the dealership where i bought the fluid. He said 9-10quarts was what i needed for the job. They do the same service as outlined in the manual using the tranny cooler lines.
