Engine swap

3.0 Montero Engine swap
I looked through the threads and didn't find the answer so I am going to ask it. I have a 1989 Motero Sport. The 3.0 in it will not start as the fuel in the tank got rusty and has sat for about 2 years now since it last ran. I question how good the engine is at this point and so am leaning toward a swap. I know I can use other 3.0's from Mitsubishi and other manufacturers 3.0s. But if I go to another models 3.0 will I still be able to use my same electronics, ie PCM. Same question if I go to a 3.5 or another engine?

Of course. New fuel lines, fuel pump, filters, gas tank cleaned out professionally... everything redone.
I hesitate to think the engine is still going to last much longer even if it does start because it will crank but not start. So when tried to startit 2 yeata ago I just moved that crappy gas into the engine. I expect its been pretty unfriendly to the cylinders and seals.
When it did run, about 3 months before I last tried and then discovered the orange gasoline in the tank, it smoked and burnt oil pretty decent. I will likely rebuild the engine in a few years if I get a replacement or sooner if I cant. But the quote I got to rebuild will be a few grand to be done fully and right.
My wife's not real keen on me fixing this thing up but I have a sentimental attachment to it since it was my first vehicle and I really don't want a new vehicle with all the electronics and expensive repairs.
