Default Mitsubishi Lancer reliability - how does it compare?

In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"? I’ll also be updating results four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner.

I'd like to include the Lancer in this research, and could potentially have initial results for the new Lancer in 4-6 months, but need more people to sign up to help out first.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge.

Thanks to people here, the 2008 Outlander will be in this month's results after all. A nice surprise. There will be an asterisk, though, for marginal sample size.

I'd like to get rid of that asterisk and include additional model years in future updates.

To help make this happen:

Two possibilities:

1. Not everyone has the problem you solve

2. Your thread needs a bump

I'll seek it out...

We did end up two responses short of the minimum, so the result will be asterisked. Hopefully we'll have enough additional participants to get rid of that asterisk the next time around, in November.

We ended up a single response short of the minimum.

The posted result for the 2008 Lancer: a better than average repair rate.

With more participants, we could get rid of that asterisk, and have a more precise result.

The current results:

In the latest results, the 2008 Lancer had a repair rate of 18 successful repair trips per 100 cars per year, which is better than average.

With more participants, we could provide more precise results, and include additional model years.

Updated results have been posted, for just the 2008 so far. The repair rate continues to be very low.

We'd like to also include the 2009 in future results, but need more participants to help make this happen.

There's now a separate results page for each model. The page for the Lancer is here:

Mr Karesh I have 47,000 miles on my 2008 Lancer. no problems BRAKES ARE still good.

No problems at all.

please ask those people from TTAC to stop bad mouthing this car.
Every kid in America wants to buy the Lancer, if they only have the money.

I am happy with it and not only me but other kids and Men who posted their videos on You Tube.

Mitsubishi will be here in America forever. Just like what we say in other Mitsu forums

" It's not a Japanese car it's a Mitsubishi"

Wish the brakes in my cars lasted that long...

I'm afraid one thing about TTAC is that everyone is allowed to voice their opinion as long as it's about a car and not a personal attack.

By the way, TrueDelta has updated results for the Lancer to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: no repairs reported yet, but small sample size

2008: 17, better than average

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have updated results for the Lancer to include owner experiences through June 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: still no repairs reported yet, but still small sample size

2008: 22, better than average

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.
