Eclipse running strange power transistor

I bought an eclipse, 1990 AWD turbo. I got it running and it idles low, like 5-600 rpm and the engine light flashes. when I reved it up it was real slow until around 4000 and then reved fast and strong. when I drove the car it ran good until 4000 and wouldn't pull and more and tried to shut down? so I thought maybe a turbo hase was blown and took it back to the shop, pulled the hoses and they looked good. felt the turbo shaft and it was the loosest I'd ever seen, ever. so I pulled the turbo.
before I buy a turbo, can a bad turbo make one run like that? or bad gasoline?

my guess would be it is out of time, maybe off a tooth or 2... my car had similar problems, almost exactly like that, and it was off about 2.5 teeth, thats probably whats wrong

the turbo is the last place id look for those symptoms.
you gotta make SURE theres no boost leaks, and make sure the hose between the turbo inletand airflow sensor has no leaks at all, anything therewill lean it out and kill it. and as was said make sure the timing belt is in time right. the stock sidemount intercoolers tend to corrode and get big leaks in them.. search on how to do a boost leak test and start there after youve checked the inlet hose. the blowoff valve ive seen get stuck open and run finny too. and that should be recirculated. if its not youll have problems.
when it cut out at 4k did it jerk really hard or just stumble and kinda go flat on its face?

BTW nick you cant be any kind of 1/2 tooth out of time, your either one, two or three teeth out, half tooth out of time the belt rib would have to be ridind up on top of the sprocket, and that dont happen.

well then i was either 2 or 3 teeth off, i would assume 2 thinking of it, more that likely a car wont even hardly run being any more off than that.. either way, thats what it sounds like his problem is to me.. but it could also be a boost leak as you said

oh, and racer, he didnt say it cut out at 4k he said 4k is when it pulls hard.. re-read the 2nd line of his post;)

it ran good until 4 grand in gear but in neutral it it runs like poop until 4000 ?? doesn't make any sense.

racerx55-when it cut out at 4k did it jerk really hard or just stumble and kinda go flat on its face?
no hard jerk, justa stuble and fell on it's face. I haven't checked fuel pressure yet.

I couldn't find any vacuum leaks, the BOV is good too but the turbo is SHOT. I don't want to buy another turbo until I find the problem. double checked the cam timing, it's good.

RE: Eclipse running strange

you checked the cam timing but how about the timing down by the crank and balance shaft?? they both need to be in time for it to run right.. but if you said the turbo is shot, thats probably whats wrong

nick would you please get off the timing issue thing. If it was timing i highly doubt that the car would run good below 4k rpms before falling on its face. So im pretty sure its not that.

Have you tried adjusting the BISS screw for raising that idle up. Also is the idle consistantly low or does it surge up and down at all. You may even have a bad MAF sensor
