hey i have a curiosity question

i have a 92 eclipse 1.8 SOHC as some of you would know. it is a 4G63 motor and i havent got to drive it yet because i recently found out it needs a new head. i was just wondering how this engine performs..is it good bad or OK?? give me your honest opinion please..

RE: hey i have a curiosity question

Unless you did a motor swap, but the 1.8 SOHC eclipse motor is a 4G37 not 4G63. The 4G63 is a DOHC 2.0L motor (turbo and non-turbo).

well im confused but changing a head isnt all that much work or money i looked into when i was going to buy a 1g dsm turbo...if thats all it needs done then just buy the heads and have a shop do it. i dont know about the 4g37 though...

well, they run. If you ever get to drive a turbo 4g63 thats worked up a little bit, you'll think every other 4 cylinder is good for nothing but powering a lawn mower.
you could get a 1.8 to run decent by letting some air in and out of the engine. Are you sure it needs a head? maybe just a blown gasket instead?

RE: hey i have a curiosity question

nope it dont need a gasket i just put a brand new one on...i was putting water in the radiator and it went stright to the oil pan...also it is a SOHC and the water was coming through under the cam...i think i have a bad head lol.. so if it is non turbo 1.8L SOHC 4G37...is it good??

Did you replace your head bolts and torqued them down properly in sequence when you replaced your head gasket? As for your other question, I'm pretty sure someone has found a way to turbo the 1.8L, but the common upgrade is to replace the 1.8L and do a complete 4G63 swap.

RE: hey i have a curiosity question

It depends on what you mean by good. If your asking is it a reliable motor which does fine for daily driving. Then i would have to say yes, ive never heard any major issues. But agian they arnt that common, so not many people deal with them. But if your talking is it a good performance motor, then the answer is NO. They are very slow cars and if your looking for speed, thats not the engine you want. Hope that answers your question

and thats where the $25 at a machine shop to have it checked pays off.
dont feel bad, ive done that too.

just do the 1G 4G63 swap and you'll be happy with the results.
