replace frt axles on 1993
Greetings
I need to replace the front axles on my 93 Eclipse, CV joints bad. Does anyone have a flow for doing this? Do I have to disconnect the lower A-frame and tie rod to get the axle out of the hub? Do I need to use the special tool that is shown in the manual to seperate the A-frame and tie rod or can I just use a tuning fork and a hammer? Any help greatly appreciated. thanks Gary |
When I changed mine I just disconnected the strut from the spindle which gave me enough room to remove the axles

I did the same as aaronhawk, its not really a difficult job, just kinda time consuming. And make sure you have transmission oil to replace what is lost pulling the axles.

thanks for the info. I assume that after you disconnect the strut from the spindle you pull the axle out of the case first since that is the shortest end and then pull it out of the spindle.

the axle will compress some, so push it through the spindle (if its tight you may want to tap it with a rubber mallet), then pull it from the case. a prybar is really helpful in getting it from the case.

sorry for the delay, thanks for the info. Manual calls for 188 lbs of torque on the outter axle nuts, is this correct?
|
if i remember correctly, there is an acceptable range. 188 is probably the upper end of the range and i believe that 150 is minimum. if your manual is calling for 188 with no range, then i'd go with that. make sure that you put some red grease on the threads of the axle and use a new cotter pin after you get it torqued.
