1999 Eclipse GST Transmission help please!

My 1999 Eclipse GST has run like a champ since I bought it new. Last year I started having problems with the bottom 3 gears (2, 4, R), sometimes they would go into gear just fine, other times they would inexplicably refuse to go into gear, like I was "locked out" of them. Sometimes when I would leave my home, everything would work. Then, somewhere in the 20 mins drive to my destination, I would lost my bottom 3 gears. When this happened, I could sometimes work the stick thru the top 3 gears and try to put the stick in the bottom 3 (with the clutch in) and after a min or so I had the bottom 3 gears again. This went on for a month or two, then the bottom 3 went out for good. I took it to my buddy who is a certified mechanic (and does most of the work on my car), he checked the linkage under the stick and in the engine bay, and he thinks the something is broken inside the transmission. He drained a little transmission fluid out and said it looked thicker than it should and saw metallic shavings in it, meaning there was something greatly worn inside the transmission. I trust him, he has always done good work for me at about half of the labor costs that the Stealership would do it for. But, I am just curious if any of you think it might be something else I could check into before looking into replacing the transmission? The vehicle has been well maintained over the years, but at 180k+ miles, Im not sure it would be worth it to put $1k into it for a used tranny and labor.
Any ideas?

Wow, I assumed all those commas and periods did something to that effect?

couldnt be bothered reading that far. Hit 'enter' a few times.
Or use bullet points.
