Default 420a ignition timing

On the 420a DOHC does the crank sensor or cam sensor signal to the ECU control the spark timing?
i'm wanting to put a timing controller on a neon 420a (same motor as NT eclipse just reverse flow direction in the head). Im not 100% sure if the CAS signal defines ignition timing or the crank sensor. Usually the crank sensor does it if they have one. i dunno - thats why im asking.
