I have Eclipse 96 GS 2.0 non turbo.
I changed the timing bell, all pulley, water pump, tensioner and the seals on camshaft and crankshaft, and also the gasket on top of the engine (valve cover gasket).

I aligned the mark on crankshaft and both of the camshaft gears and I checked them several times. Only two marks on camshaft gears are not on line with center of the gears, they are 2-3 mm below. I try several times but I can not make them on one line (two mark and center on gears).

I put every thing together and start the engine, but when Idle it drops to about 600 rpms (sometimes below) almost wants to die the engine and jumps back to 1000 rpms. While driving it is running fine till I am at a steady speed then stutters again. My check engine light came on and stays on. I check the code and it was P0172 (System too Rich - Bank 1). I can smell fuel like its running rich.

Does anybody to have an idea what could be wrong?

Do you think that I broke one of the crankshaft or camshaft sensor, or I lost the vacuum somehow and that’s why my brakes do not work well anymore? Especially when Idle it drops to about 600 rpms (driving with 5-10 mph), the brake pedal is hard and the car does not stop. I checked the lines; they look fine and I can not hear noise of vacuum leak.

The car was running fine before I changed the timing bell.

Re do the timming to get it just right, thats proly the main problem, if that dosent do it then check the mas, iac, tps, o2 sensors and the cts. My friend who had the same code had it becuse his coolent tem sensor went bad, it was telling the ecu that the motor was constantly cold, so it kept dumping lots of fuel into the motor to make it worm up. Which cause the code bank one too rich. But he also replaced all of those sensors before the problem went away. He was still running too right tho but that was because he was using 440's with his star kit. I'd say check everything with a multi meter before you head down to satan. I know that the mas can go over 4.5 volts and the o2 shouldnt go over 5.0 volts, which would be super rich. BTW I am guessing that you have a pocketdata logger. 95-97 2gnt's do a cool trick called a key dance. (replace **** with 2g nt < no spaces. ) http://www.2gnt.com/nuke/modules.php...rticle&artid=8

Yeah i was going to say IAC motor at first but throwing a bank 1 rich code prolly a combo of timing and a sensor. Try to look online to see if you can find what the voltages SHOULD be for each one. Might be int he Chiltons? I don't know for sure though. Head to Satan as a last resort. If you find anything else let us know and we'll see what we can figure out. Also if I'm not mistaken you have a no tolerance engine so your timing can't be off but 1 tooth (Am I wrong on that? Is it 1 tooth or 2 before valves slap pistons?)

na they can go -4 in both directions before you have problems. It can go a bit farther -6 but you would have to fly cut the pistons. ITs actually a really good thing b/c the 420a dosn't have much for after market ecu's besides mega squirt and a aem stand alone, so you can retard the timming manualy for high boost applications or wild cam grinds. Some kid on twognt.com is running 10:5:1 compression, 15 psi and retarted the timming and that mother fu3ker rolls on the stock ecu.(low 12's)
