awd to 2wd

I was riding passenger in my friends car today, and while examining a very nice '80s toyota pickup truck at A red light, I noticed its locking hubs on the front wheels. My thought at the moment was "I wonder if I could put something like locking hubs on my Talon if I felt I wanted to do some drifting and whatnot......."
I did some research and found nothing that would really prevent this from working. I may be missing something.

I didn't say I was going to do it, but it was just an interesting thought.

Trucks use 2 driveshafts for 4x4 I belive a front and rear??!! not sure though but that is where the diff of 4x4 versus AWD come in

RE: awd to 2wd

there are conversions you can make it RWD but then it is permenant unless you want to do all the work in reverse again to go AWD again

I could see it being easily to permanently convert it to 2wd. However, from what i know about locking hubs, all it does is disconnect the driveline from being able to move power to the wheel, by allowing it to spin freely. I still dont see a problem with doing this.

4x4 and AWD are 2 different things, I know when I see ruck lifted that are 4x4 I can see the front diff and rear diff they look the same so I figure that there are 2 driveshafts one for front rotation and one for rear

AWD is different it works like a FWD car up front axecels and tranny ect and one drive shaft to power the rear

I could be wrong thouugh

RE: awd to 2wd

I can see where you are confused, but i used to have an 87 toyota that had independant front suspension and had half shafts just like on my talon. With very lifted trucks, it is necessary to have a solid front axle, and im guessing thats what you are thinking of...Correct me if im wrong...

and i do realize that 4wd and awd are totally different things.

your fron wheels are powered direct from the tranny not any drive shaft. you would have to pop out the front axells from the tranny to have them spin freely. I have seen AWD cars made RWD there is an EVO IX out in cali made for drifting but it was made specific to drift and AWD is out of question now on that car. I know ive see ACD or DCCD from STis and EVOs. the ACD changes when the Diffs lock to adjust for traction in surtain condition.

the DCCD from the STi changes the TQ split from fron to rear in differnt rations. for example stock is 30% up front power you can go 50% or 65% up front with the DCCD

yes, well isnt the hub just a part of the wheel? And in this case, a piece you can disconnect from any drive line.

ok heres it all in a nutshell...no you will not ever be able to do what you are referring too unless you spend bookou bucks on a one off custom steup.you could just do rwd buy removing the front axles but who wants that hassle. there you have it

No i think its possible. I just went over to my friends house who is a 4x4 enthusiast. he tells me it is possible with minimal work and went into a deep explanation of why it is. Ill make a few pictures with MS paint tomorrow to explain what he told me. Im off to bed now.

this is a ridiculously basic general concept of how a locking hub works. the axle goes into the hub, and it can either spin freely, or be locked in place. So generally speaking any awd vehicle could use locking hubs.

4x4 are more than just the hub though you have to shift it in and out of 4x4 rwd inside to.

I really honestly see no way this is possible AWD is not even close to 4x4 only thing alike is power to all four wheels. I would assume if it is possible there whould be alot AWD guys with it because AWD sucks from roll racing and that would be a big help.
