bad sputtering....
Alright heres the problem,
about two weeks ago My 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS, started to sputter while accelerating, and had a rough idle, dropping below 1000rpms, almost stalling. Now the only thing I did differently that week was let my gas level get below where I normally fill up again (1/4th of a tank). Noticing this, I thought it could be some extra dirt and grim in the tank, so we dropped the tank and it was pretty nasty. Cleaned it, replaced Fuel pump, and filter, and the problem still persisted. The Idle isnt as rough anymore, but it has ZERO acceleration. When I push down on the pedal It sputters real bad, and almost doesnt want to go forward. When it does go forward it takes awhile to get up to speed, then acts normal. I've checked the TPS sensor, thats fine, Did a compression test, Fine, Did a fuel pressure test, thats also fine, Replaced spark plugs, still didnt help. I also checked the EGR valve and solenoid, because the breaks seemed almost non existent when I go to pull it out of the garage... But still the problem remains. :( Please give me any insight on to what i should move onto next, I have spent too much on crap that doesnt fix it, This is my only way of getting around to my job and school! PLEASE HELP!! |
I need ideas on what is next! I'm clean out of ideas, and I dont know what else to do! I've spent too much money changing out parts that dont fix the problem,
PLEASE HELP! |
check all wires and sensors you can find under the hood, sputtering can be a fairly broad problem perhaps check your intake sensors or throttle body and the throttle body cable to see if its opening properly

Check your cat converter. If it is plugged you will experience exactly the symptoms you are describing. Mine died at 78 K miles, but I did get a check engine light. Dealer replaced it under 8 yr/80,000 emissions warranty. Obviously that was a few years back.
I'd also look at the coil packs. I assume your air filter element isn't plugged. If your check engine light is on, Auto Zone or Advance Auto will read the codes for you at no charge. THat might help you narrow things down. Good luck. Hope you find the problem. |
Its finally been fixed! It wasn't any of the things that were obvious. The problem was a little plastic spacer that sat between the fuel pump and the beginning if the fuel line. It had a pin needle sized crack in it that was leaking just enough fuel back into the tank that was causing it to loose fuel pressure.....
one in a million find! Thank you everyone for your input! |
I am having the same exact issue man! my idle varies and once my car gets hot and i come to a stop it will want to die on me. Once i take off it sputters at low rps in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear. Once rps get up there everything seems fine. I hate it because it makes me look like I don't know how to drive haha! but really this is annoying. Everything I do to fix the issue doesn't work.
