cam seals

I have a 96 mitsubishi eclipse rs, the cam seals are leaking badly and im about to replace them, do i need to take the head off the motor to do this? a step by step guide would be helpful and appreciated thanks.

what do you mean cam seals? valve stem seals or valve cover gasket?

KaiserEclipse May 25, 2010 07:54 PM

The acutal cam seals, i belive there kind of like an o-ring seal its on the end of the head, a lot of oil is leaking on the one side of the engine where the belt is.

it may only be the valve cover gasket that is leaking

Hey brother... after you check the valve cover gasket... if there is oil leaking over the motor mount and the water pump it is most likely the cam seals... make sure you get mitsubishi standard OEM seals... that autozone... o'riellies, advance S&%* won't seal as well... Also, make sure you use the proper sealant when you put the outer camshaft caps back on. The manual will tell you the proper place to put the sealant... I recommend permatex ultra black or the OEM mitsubishi stuff. You do not need to remove the head, but you do need to remove the time belt and the camshaft sprockets. Then remove the valve cover and the outer camshaft cap. Remove the seal. Replace the camshaft cap and add the appropriate amount of sealant... replace the cam seals by pressing them into the head... you can use a 1/4 inch socket extension and a hammer to pound it back into the head.... you can use ultra black on the cam seal or you can't... its up to you... I do..., but thats just cheap insurance... i hope that helps brother.. if you need any more help or if this doesn't make sense (i:ve been drinking)... just PM me and I'll try to help you more... Good luck man
