Car stuck in 3rd gear. Need help fast please!
 

1997 Eclipse RS
So i was driving to work and as i was shifting in 3rd gear i heard a popping noise. So then i decided to shift into 4th and i got nothing. The shifter is free to move from 3rd to 4th but doesn't move left or right. It seems to be stuck in 3rd gear. So i had a buddy push me to about 30 mph and i was able to drive it home in 3rd. Could the shift cable be broke? All help is appreciated.

it sounds like your linkage popped off. look under the hood on your trans and see if anythings disconnected or broken

I somehow managed to get it out of gear now. Im not sure if this is the linkage but under the hood near the top of the trans there was a little lever thing that can move three ways. It was in the top position so i popped it in the middle position and now i have move the shifter left and right. But now its stuck in 3rd gears position and if wont move out of it. Did i mess something else up?
Sorry for the bad description, im a noob at this stuff.
