ECU Question
 

I have a '97 eclipse GS automatic and need to buy a new ecu. My question is does the ecu need to be programmed to match my car's specific VIN and mileage? Or, can I just swap the ecu with one of the same model number etc (mine is 5293014AC) and it'll work fine?

Some sources say you can just get the right ecu and put it in where as some online auto parts websites say it needs to be programmed etc and charge a fee for programming. A little clarification would help.

I just ran into this problem myself, I bought a 1996 Eclipse and the guy that had it before me was a hack, I had 2 different engine codes for an automatic when I have a 5speed, lol... I did some looking into it and the 2 key thing that is important on the ECU for these cars is engine type and transmission type. You need the correct engine type so it knows what sensors to look for and the transmission is also just as important since the automatics come with a module that the ECU will look for.
There are a few on EBAY I've seen that seem way over priced but they didn't specify what they came from and when I contacted them they just said match the model/serial number up to see if it works. There was one seller on EBAY that offers to program the ECU specific to your VIN and transmission type and offers a lifetime warranty but that was about $240. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-...item4aa2245310
I picked on up off of craigslist for $30 off someone parting out a 97 with the same motor and transmission and it has been working great, just make sure you know what Engine and Transmission the ECU is meant for:)
