Exhaust?
3" refers to the size of the piping. Eclipses come with 2.5" stock sized piping. Generally the bigger you go, the better performance you'll get. But you can go too big....as you'll see there aren't many 3.5" systems and no 4" systems. The bigger the piping, the less backpressure is in the exhaust side of the engine. On turbocharged vehicles no backpressure is a good thing. If there is some backpressure, then it's alright, if there is too much, then it will "flow" back into the turbo and damage the exhaust turbine wheel. Now, exhuast gasses pass leave the engine in pulse, kind of like waves. Very fast fast pulses, but you can still feel them at idle. If you have too large piping, say 4", then the pulses would dissipate and create sort of a barrier for the oncoming pulses. Not good, because it may create backpressure, but most importantly, the pulsetraveling through the exhaust system creat sort of a vacuum that *pull* the exhaust gasses away from the engine into the exhaust system. A larger diameter piping will not allow the exhuast gasses to create a strong vacuum and will ruin the flow of exhaust gasses. You need a careful balance of sizing to reduce backpressure and also not screw up the flow, and a three inch system seems to be an equilibrium on turbo eclipses. This may be more info than you needed, but hey, atleast you learned!</P>
