help!! considering buying '97 eclipse GS

I am thinking about buying a 97 GS. Would someone give me some info about the history of this model. He has replaced the timing belt and claims that it has no leaks and runs great. My concern is that it has 186,000 miles. I will be using thiscar only around town and I am thinking about giving to my daughter in about a year.

RE: looking at 97 eclipse GS

the only major flaw in the 95-99 eclipses non turbo'd are the head gaskets. ask the seller if they have ever replaced it. if they haven't, than it's on a matter of time before it goes. mine went around 118,000. other than that and the fact that they are a little puny on the power side, they are a very good daily driver car.

cuz he probably doesnt want one that is riced out. HAHA, jk rcj

they are pretty reliable cars. The engine should run pretty well. the only thing id be worried about on a car with that many mile and that old is if it has been taken care of and rust. and like RCJ said, headgaskets are the main problem but with only alittle mechanical experience its a pretty simple job tofix it yourself.

But like i said the only stuff you might have go bad is regular maintanance. (brakes, suspension, tune-up, ect.) How much does the person want for the car?

I have an RS, which is the same car as the GS, and I can tell you that its a great car for back and forth as long as its not ragged b/c you think its fast.... b/c its not fast. lol

The only concerns are the timing belt, and head gasket.
Ask if when the timing belt was done, was the timing belt Idler pully, and the timing tensioner changed?
Its imperitive that they were, or you could get into a world of **** with that car.
