Default ignition

does someone know what kind of ignition a 97 GST have , cuz my car is idling below 1000 rpm and it fluctuates up and down by about 500rpm, an autoshop teacher told me the timing belt was off a little bit could that be my problem?

sounds to me like either a sensor, or an air leak.

A boost leak check is a must in turbo cars. There's a lot of pressure flowing around in those IC couplers. It can also be sensors but since boost leaks are SO common, try that first.
Do it and post back. Engine timing won't cause this surging. Besides, ask yourself why the timing would be off or even how it would be off. Have you touched it recently?
I think TE has a lexicon in here somewhere but I forgot where, search around and that should help you with these acronyms or get yourself a Haynes/Chiltons manual.

in the general mitsubishi section at the top there is a sticky that has all of the acronyms that may be used. So if you ever have a question about what something means it should be in there.

Did he examine your timing belt before he said that? Or did he just throw it out there as a guess?

Without grounding the timing and putting a timing light on it, how does he know the timing is off? If your timing is off, your ECU will try and get you back to time all the while run like crap. If it's too far off, then you'd hear things clanking.

The Vfaq has a lot of answers to your question. http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html
I suggest getting a Haynes/Chiltons manual for the rest though bud or do a search in here. All that stuff has been answered before.
Why does your auto teacher say that? Are there things clanking around in the motor? I want to know too.
