Intermittant Anti lock ABS light and Code 53
 

Greetings,

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX that has developed an intermittent Anti lock ABS light and Code 53. Sometimes the car will go for a week at a time with no problem, while other times the light will appear every day. I can usually resolve the problem by shutting off the car and re-starting it. The ABS definitely works once the light is off.

Can anyone suggest if this problem may be due to an electrical problem, faulty ABS relay, faulty ABS motor and pump, debris or air in brake lines, or low alternator output?

I want to avoid replacing the ABS motor if without confirming that is the cause of the problem.
