Knocking/timing!

Knocking/timing!
Hi all...my 97 spyder just started making a knocking noise at around 2000 - 3000 rpm. It went from no knock one day to a knock the next! The noise is a definate knock...not a tap. It sounds like it is coming from the top of the motor around the number one cylinder. The timing belt was changed(blown) by the last owner...when I took the upper timing belt cover off in order to get the valve cover off and see what was goin on I realized the timing marks on the cam sprockets arent even close to lining up next to one another...approx ten teeth apart. Is it possible for my moter to idle fine and run normal untill it hits 2000-3000rpm being ten teeth out...or did the previous owner have the cam sprockets off and not line the marks up properly on reinstall and the timing isnt the issue. I havent removed valve cover yet after seeing this. Originally I was hoping for a broken spring or something easier and cheaper to fix. Any advise or insite would be very much appreciated.

Hello all, as you can tell I just joined the group. Excellent site. Did any of you guys figure out what the knock on top was? I bought a 90 turbo 120,000 miles from a guy for $600.00 who said the knock suddenly appeared one day driving down the highway. I have listened all around the motor and the sound is deff on top near the #1 cyl. I listen at the oil pan and couldn't here it. At first I thought valve lash adjusters, the way the noise comes and goes at different rpms. Welllll I rigged up angle iron(stamped steel with predrilled holes) from the fire wall down to the motor mount and and bolted the cam gears to it with a piece of wood between the gears so they wouldn't move with the belt on and slid them off. It work great and save a crap load of time. Anyhow, I pulled the cams and replaced the lifters, installed the cams and gears. The slapping, knocking noise is still there. Like I said the noise fluctuates with rpm. I next thing I will do is pull the oil pan off to see if there is any metal, ie: piston skirt. If nothing, the only thing I can think of is a piston pin which is unusual.

yes I have done that , I have 145# on all four holes. The book said 160# is max for turbo and 120 for low. I would think if it was a rod bearing that I would here it at the oil pan. The car idles fine right at 700rpm
