well dsmlink is for tuning. On their website they will describe all the functions and what you need to be able to use it. But you only need dsmlink if you planning on running an upgraded turbo and like 350hp+. But if all your looking to do is read codes though the obdII wire then there are a couple ways. One is you can get an actual scanner. Or the cheaper way is to buy a cheap palm pilot and upload the software for the OBD then just buy the cable you would need

Here is where you get the cable and program
http://www.pocketlogger.com/?pid=plobdii

Then read up here as to what type of pda is good to use with it. But when most OBD readers are more than $200. This way you will spend about $150 however you willhave alot more capability than a OBD reader because the pocket logger can actually extract data from other sensors on the car such as timing and o2. Some people actually use these for tuning

I used to have a '96 dodge avenger and If I'm correct I'm pretty sure it will work on the 2g eclipses, with this method it will cost you $0 to retrieve the ecu codes, in as little as 1 minute. I'm pretty sure it will only work for years 95-97, but I've heard it's worked for a few 98's.

You put your key in the ignition and turn it as follows....KEY ON-OFF, ON-OFF, ON_KEEP ON the check engine light should blink the codes, there will be a pause to indicate the next number. Here's an example....(23)......blink..blink......blink..blin k..blink. I'm pretty sure you turn the ignition on/off 3 times, to get the check engine light to flash, if it doesn't work try it turning the ignition on/off 4 times, its been while but I think 3 times is correct.

Then again there's always another quick and simple alternative for all cars made with the OBDII connector (years 96+), go to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, O'Reilly Auto Parts, or a similar auto parts store they will usually check your ECU codes for free.

what will what thing? we have talked about a couple things in the thread. The palm pilot thing is ONLY for monitoring. There is no way to change anything with it.
