Is my transmission dead?

So the other day my 96 gsx was making a sound that was similar to the sound of my gears grinding, but it was making this sound while I was just driving around.

So my friend said it was my tranny, so we decided to change the gear oil. I put in that vavoline 75w90 synthetic that kragen sells. I drove it around right after I changed it and it was great. Then about an hour later I drove it to my parents house and it started to smelling like burning gear oil and the transmission started to make this whining sound while I was driving. I get off the freeway and I can barely get into my gears. I get to my parents house and find out that my that my transaxle was leaking and so I drained that again and refilled it, and put more of the vavoline stuff in. and it didn't leak again. but when I was driving home it had the same problem.

So is my tranny shot or what? any help would be appreciated.

Where was it leaking from?

It was leaking from the transaxle, so I bought a new seal for it and as far as I can tell its not leaking anymore.

Did it make the noise again or was it just hard to shift?

It was still the noise, and it was still hard to shift. Did I use the wrong gear oil? That is the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Maybe I should have mentioned this before, but before I changed the transaxle fluid the second time, this caused my speedometer to go out, also my clutch fork is going/gone. I don't know if any of that could be related.

Well if the noise comes back its probably a bearing inside the trans going bad. Does the noise change w/ the clutch pedal in or out?

I believe it went away when I pushed the clutch in. It has been a week since I drove it, I will drive it again later today and make sure. Then ill let you know.

Ok, So I just took it for a short drive. It wasn't hard to get into gears, but it was grinding pretty horribly, and it it was grinding while I drove but it wasn't a constant hard grind. Also when the clutch was out there was another very quite grind/ticking sound that went away when I pushed the clutch in.

It might be time to pull the trans out and see if the tob is wasted.
