If you are going to put a new engine in, i suggest you get a 6 bolt motor from the earlier (1990-1992.5) dsms. Your motor is a7 bolt motor which is prone to crankwalk(search the term) the earlier dsm vehicles had a 6 bolt motor which is alot stronger. It would be EASIER to do a 7 bolt. But i wouldnt do it. Also, why do you need a new one?

you guys worry too much about crankwalk. ive never heard more people flip over a thrust bearing before.
MAINTENANCE on any 7 bolt motor will greatly help. i ran one to 250,000 miles with a 5 speed and beat the hell out of it its whole life, tried to blow it up quite a few times& about the time the oil pump finally gave up is when i started getting some end play in the crank after driving it 20 miles on 3 cyliners with#3 rod sticking out of the oil pan.change the damn oil once in a while and they wont do that. ( at least mine didnt)
#1 thing that causes that is people beating on the end of the crank with a hammer to put on or remove pulleys then engines go to **** from there.
the answer to everyone's questions about engine replacement is not "6 bolt" every time.
if you want to find a used replacement engine for your car try car-part.com and you can search your local junk yards. alot of them will let you hear them run before they pull them.
personally i would rebuild it if its in decent shape inside. i rebuilt alot of engines and you get one that runs like new and then some for the cost of a new engine, you just have your time put in it.

I agree. I like the 6 bolt for the 6 bolt internals and the 2g head for it's velocity though. If I had a 7 bolt, I'd rebuild it from top to bottom with ARP headstuds, a metal 4 layer head gasket, and 3rd gen 4g63 lifters (no more lifter tick with them) and maintain it like any other motor . If you're looking for a track car, then a 6 bolt motor is an obvious choice because of the quantity of air it can move. This arguement is on just about every DSM board too and it's usually a stalemate, lol.

So, I say rebuild what you have.
Why do you feel that you need a new motor or a rebuild anyway? Poor compression? Blown head gasket? What?

3G were 4G64 and they def do have lifter tick problems. the 6G72 not as bad but the 4G64s do. the one I ad sounded like a deasel motor when it was do for a oil change
