OBD II or OBD I
 

Past day or so I've been curious if my 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST is OBD II. I believe it is since it has a 16 port connector underneath the steering wheel but I'm not sure. I really want to buy a code scanner since this car is a hobby car and I don't want to be spending $60-100 everytimeto know what my car is having issues with. Anyone know whether its OBD II or I?

Pretty sure its OBDI thats what my 95 gsx is.

The thing is, I was reading this: http://www.pocketlogger.com/index.ph...aq_gs_whichcarandon the way bottom it says some of the 95 Mitsubishi eclipse and eagle taloncars are OBD II compliant. I tried to find the sticker underneath the hood but since I have done alot of cosmetic work to the car, i can't find it anywhere. My hood now is carbon fiber so i can't confirm it. lol. I'm using a 4g63 engine, Turbo.

I am pretty sure OBD II was not in cars untill 1996 -present

would my 98 gst be obd1 or obd2??? cuz there is a place around here that no matter what your cars emissions they will pass your car if it is a certain obd#... and i would like to know...thanks guys

All cars after 96 was mandated to be OBD II. check my link to get more details. Also, the GSX of 95 is OBD II but only seems to work with a select few code readers. The GST was given the OBD II port but it was never connected to OBD II specs. This came from a representative at mitsubishi US.

Also, does anyone know if the ECU from a 96 work just fine in a 95 or how would I go by upgrading my ecu to 96(or later)safely.

all of the 95+ eclipses and talons came with the OBDII port i know cuz i had to use it a few times to pull some codes. Yes a 96 ecu would work fine in a 95 but as youve read, you dont need to change to a 96 ecu. Just stick with the 95. Also the good thing about the 95's is alot of them were EPROM. which is a huge advantage. The way to check is this http://www.dsmlink.com/faq-eprom.html

so I could easily just plug a OBD II code scanner into my GST and get the codes I need? Right now I have so many answers its confusing, lol, and I don't want to buy a OBD II scanner for $200 to find that my car is OBD I. I look online and I find a Yes and No answer and its driving me nuts. lol. So if i take a look at my ECU and I see the E, I'm OBD II?

No the E means you have an EPROM which meansits easily tunable later on if you ever get to that stage. But If you want to get codes then go to Autozone and see if they can pull them cuz they do it for free. And at least that will tell you if yours works. It worked fine at autozone for me
