RE: overdrive
Here's what I noticed when I had an automatic Mitsu motor with a DCX tranny.
At speeds below 50-ish was when having the overdrive more for keeping the RPMs down if I had the button pushed in. If I had the overdrive off (yellow dummy light in the middle of the instrument cluster on), the tranny would stay in gear longer.
Here's what I notice with a manual tranny. If I'm going 25mph and in second (2500RPMs), my wideband reads stoich, if I shift to 3rd (2k RPMs), my wideband bounces around until it sits just shy of being "too" lean. That's not so much of an issue at low loads though.
I've always heard that keeping the OD button on at all times helped keep gas milage up, I sort of believed it when I had an auto and I believe it even more that I have a manual with monitoring devices with my manual.
So, the only time I would turn off OD is if I needed the extra RPMs to go uphill or for passing, the rest of the time, I would just leave OD on.
BTW, I used to turn off OD in town and I noticed my gas milage drop just a tad. Maybe it was just my car, but I noticed it
Your call.

Ive always just left mine on all the time. It will usually just kick in when im at 40+ mph and at low throttle.

Another thing I used to do was "test" the OD passing. With it on, the car would still shift to a lower gear as you would expect, but the tranny would take it's time going into the lower gear and then shift to the higher gear as it got closer to 6k (I think it was), whereas, passing and turning off overdrive...the tranny would quickly shift to a lower gear and stay until I turned on the OD again, which was usually after I already turned back into the correct lane (2 lane highway). Nonetheless, that 6g73 with163bhp was really crappy in terms of HP, lol. It would take what seemed like 2 years to pass a semi going uphill! Lol. Man, I love my 4g63!!!!
